Proxy types: residential, datacenter, ISP, mobile
An in-depth breakdown of the four proxy types — how the technology works, how they differ on success rate, price and use-cases. Helps you pick the right type for your task.
Why the choice of proxy type matters
A proxy isn't a single technology — it's four very different ones. Between the cheapest datacenter at $0.50/GB and a dedicated mobile port at $45/month there's a 50× gap in price and a 100× gap in effectiveness for certain tasks. So before you read the catalog, it's worth understanding what differentiates them.
Every type performs the same function — routing your traffic through an intermediate server with a different IP address. But where that IP comes from determines how hard it is for anti-bot systems to detect.
Residential proxies
IPs from real home users of internet providers — Comcast in the US, Vodafone in the EU, BT in the UK, etc. How does such an IP end up in a proxy pool? Usually through legitimate partnerships with VPN apps that pay users for opting in to share part of their traffic (Bright Data partnered with HolaVPN, Decodo bought the Smartproxy pool, and so on).
Strengths:
- High trust score — anti-bot systems see a regular user
- Big pools: 100M+ IPs at Bright Data, 125M at Decodo
- Precise geo targeting down to city or ASN
Limitations:
- Expensive:
$2-10 per GB - Slower than datacenter (home internet is unstable)
- Ethical questions about how the pool is sourced
Datacenter proxies
IPs from server centres — Amazon AWS, Hetzner, OVH, Rackspace. The simplest and cheapest category: the provider rents (or owns) servers, runs proxy software on them and sells access.
Strengths:
- Fast: 20-80ms latency
- Cheap:
$0.5-2 per GB - Stable uptime (datacenter-grade)
Limitations:
- Anti-bot systems easily detect data-centre ASNs
- Cloudflare blocks most large ASNs at the IP-block level
- Doesn't work for social media or protected services
ISP proxies (static residential)
A hybrid: IPs belong to real ISPs (like residential), but they're hosted in data centres (like datacenter). Technically — a block of IPv4s purchased from an ISP and installed on the proxy provider's servers.
Thanks to the hybrid, they're as fast as datacenter and look like residential. Caveat: ISP pool size is always limited (a few thousand IPs, not millions), and they're sold per IP rather than per GB.
ISP proxies are the best choice for sneaker drops, bots and dedicated workloads where you need low latency plus a clean IP without shared traffic. Rayobyte and Webshare lead this segment.
Mobile proxies (4G/5G)
IPs from mobile carriers — Vodafone Mobile, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless; in Ukraine, Kyivstar and lifecell. They run through real SIM cards installed in proxy farms: 4G/5G modems in a data centre or in private apartments.
Mobile is the hardest type to detect with anti-fraud systems. The reason is carrier-grade NAT. A single mobile-operator IP is shared by thousands of real subscribers at the same time. Banning that IP would mean banning a thousand subscribers. So mobile IPs are practically immune to bans on social platforms.
Architecturally, two approaches:
- Pool-based mobile (like residential): the provider runs hundreds of modems and rotates between them. You pay per GB. Examples: SOAX, ProxyEmpire.
- Dedicated port (go-proxy style): you rent a specific port with a specific SIM, unlimited traffic, rotation through a URL or Telegram. Examples: iProxy.online, MobileProxy.Space, LTESpace, 3gproxy.
Comparison table
| Type | Price | Speed | Trust score | Pool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Datacenter | $0.5-2 / GB | Very high | Low | Large |
| ISP | $0.20-3 / IP | High | High | Thousands of IPs |
| Residential | $2-10 / GB | Medium | High | Millions |
| Mobile | $5-30 / GB or $25-45 / port | Low to medium | Highest | Hundreds to thousands |
How to pick a type for your task
Scraping public data (e-commerce, real estate, SERP): residential rotating
Sneaker and ticket bots: ISP dedicated
Multi-account on social media and Facebook Ads: mobile dedicated
Backend integrations without protection: datacenter
iGaming and affiliate: mobile or residential with a tolerant provider (SOAX, IPRoyal, ProxyEmpire)
Don't start with the most expensive option. In 70% of cases the task is solved by residential at $2-3/GB. Mobile at $25/port is the last bastion for specific use-cases, not the default.
